The SS Bessemer was a British cargo ship built in 1944 during World War II. It was named after Sir Henry Bessemer, an English engineer who developed the Bessemer process for mass-producing steel in the 19th century.
The ship was originally built as a Liberty ship, one of the thousands of cargo ships constructed during the war. After the war, it was sold to the British Iron and Steel Corporation and converted into a bulk carrier.
In 1959, the SS Bessemer made headlines when it collided with the SS Kaitawa off the coast of New Zealand, causing the Kaitawa to sink and resulting in the loss of 29 lives. The Bessemer was later repaired and returned to service.
The ship changed hands several times throughout the years, and was eventually sold to Taiwanese owners in 1974 and renamed the MV Fu Sheng. It was scrapped in 1989.
The SS Bessemer played a small but significant role in the history of World War II, and its legacy lives on as a symbol of the vital role played by cargo ships in the war effort.
